Developing a toolkit for assessing student understanding of how Indigenous topics intersect with their field of study
Ongoing
About
This project focused on supporting ongoing efforts across Science to embed indigenous perspectives and practices. The team created a three-part toolkit to help instructors better understand how Indigenous issues and perspectives intersect with their field. The overarching aim of this toolkit is to assess the impact of undergraduate and graduate curriculum modifications on student understanding of how Indigenous issues intersect with their given field of study.
The toolkit will consist of three major parts: a student questionnaire (with multiple choice and open-ended questions), a student interview protocol, and a facilitator’s guide. The questionnaire will include open-ended questions options that could be embedded into coursework or research lab team meetings as a reflective writing activity. The facilitator’s guide will include guidance on when and how to use the assessment tools in courses or research supervision.
Objectives
Produce a toolkit that can be used by individual instructors and units working towards Goal #4 (Indigenizing our curriculum) to assess the impact of undergraduate and graduate curriculum modifications on student understanding of how Indigenous issues intersect with their field of study (discipline in Science).
Work Plan, Timeline & Milestones
PHASE 1: Developing the student questionnaire and interview protocol tools with UBC community member input (~1-2 months)
PHASE 2-Piloting the student questionnaire and interview protocol tools with students (~3-6 months)
PHASE 3-Developing the facilitation guide for instructors and units to use the tools (~1-2 months)
PHASE 4-Disseminating the Toolkit (~1-2 months)
Anticipated Impacts
This project will produce a performance measure (toolkit) for instructors and unit leaders across Faculty of Science (and beyond) to measure progress towards ISP goals. The data produced from using the tools can be used to inform efforts to redesign courses or graduate research traineeships and assist the broader Faculty of Science community in identifying evidence-based practices for “indigenizing our curriculum” (Goal #4).
