Postdoc Position: Water Dynamics in the Global Change Intersectoral Modeling System - University of Maryland
The University of Maryland (UMD) invites applications for a postdoctoral associate position focused on contributing to the Global Change Intersectoral Modeling System (GCIMS) Scientific Focus Area (SFA), sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy. Broadly, the project will focus on understanding the complex interactions among energy, water, land, socioeconomics, climate, and other important human and natural systems at regional to global scales. The postdoc will focus specifically on enhancing the representation of water dynamics in GCIMS, and contributing to scientific experiments that explore challenges and opportunities for the human system’s responses to evolving environmental influences such as droughts.
The postdoc will work under the direct supervision of Dr. Thomas Wild, Assistant Research Professor at the Earth System Science Interdisciplinary Center. However, the postdoc will be part of an interdisciplinary, multi-institutional research team, led by the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. This position will include a competitive salary and benefits. The position is available as early as October 2020.
To apply, send Dr. Thomas B. Wild (twild@umd.edu) a cover letter, CV, and the contact information for 2-3 professional references.
Call for TA Applications: Master of Data Science - UBC
The Master of Data Science is accepting applications for TAships with the UBC Master of Data Science (MDS) program and related courses BAIT 509/580A. A list of the MDS courses can be viewed here: https://ubc-mds.github.io/descriptions/. The Master of Data Science program is on the block system, and so each course lasts one month. We ideally want 12 hours/wk TA commitments per course. Students TAing multiple courses are welcome. Our blocks fall roughly under these dates:
Block 4: January to mid February
Block 5: Late February to late March
Block 6: Late March to late April.
If you are interested, please fill out the application form.
The deadline to apply is October 20, 2020.

Title: Earth's Recovery from the Moon-forming Giant Impact
Date & Time: Thursday, October 15th at 11:00am
Place: Zoom Room
Abstract:
The energy released during giant impacts exceeds our common experience. Our planet was transformed into unfamiliar physical states multiple times during the main stage of accretion. High temperatures drove chemical pathways that are not attainable today. It is now possible to reach the pressures and temperatures of planetary collisions in laboratory experiments to study the thermodynamic properties of planetary materials at the extremes of nature. These data, incorporated into numerical simulations, provide information needed to predict the chemical outcomes of collisions. New results reframe our thinking about the early evolution of the Earth, including the chemistry of core formation and formation of the first atmosphere. High temperature processes point towards new explanations for puzzling chemical signatures from the deep mantle that date back to Earth’s accretion.

Well-being Workshop
The Faculty of Science has invited wellbeing expert Thara Vayali to provide a series of 3 lunchtime sessions on exploring work-life balance, anxiety, resilience and the impacts of remote working during these unprecedented times. This is the invitation to register for the second Wellbeing Workshop, to be held on Monday, October 19, 12:00pm – 1:00pm. Attending the first workshop is not a prerequisite. All online sessions are open to everyone in the Faculty of Science including students, so we encourage you to share this invitation within your Departments.
Session 2: October 19, 12pm – 1pm: https://faculty-of-science-wellbeing-workshop2.eventbrite.com
Session 3: November 18, 12pm – 1pm; link to follow
There is no cost to attendees or Departments. Pre-registration is required for each session in order for attendees to receive a Zoom link to connect to the session. Please remember to cancel if you can’t make it so that there is room for everyone who might wish to attend. You can attend any or all of the 3 sessions.
If you were unable to attend the first session on October 7, you can self-enroll to access the recorded Wellbeing Workshop #1 at: https://canvas.ubc.ca/enroll/AXATLP
Please connect to VPN and log in using your CWL. Then you will be able to access CANVAS as student.
