UBC ATSC 413 - Forest-fire Weather & Climate

Thursday Schedule - Fires

(Follow this schedule to access fire cases, online lectures, homeworks, and quizzes. In this hybrid course, material is presented both in person and online.)

Week 06 Thursday:     Theme:  Fire Behavior Prediction (FBP) System.

Topic Activities & Assignments Learning Goals. By the end of this section, you will be able to ...
Lab / HW Start reviewing the topics below and answering the assignment questions in class as Lab work, and finish at home as homework. Submit via Canvas within a week after today. Focus your studies of the topics below in order to answer the attached Lab/Homework questions.
FBP - Fuel Types

See fb18

Give examples of several of the 16 fuel types of the Canadian Fire Behavior Prediction System, show on a low-res low-res map (or a high-res map) where those fuels are found.
FBP - Rate of Spread (ROS) See fb19 Explain what weather, fuel, and terrain factors affect the flame-front Rate of Spread (ROS).
FBP - Head Fire Intensity (HFI) See fb20 Use and calculate the Surface Fuel Consumption (SFC), Crown Fraction Burned (CFB), Total Fuel Consumption (TFC), and Head Fire Intensity (HFI), and explain how they relate to fire and weather.
FBP - Part 3: Significance See fb21 Relate Head Fire Intensity (HFI) to fire behavior and to tactics for wildfire suppression.
Weather Briefing Short (10 minute) weather briefing on Vancouver weather by a student team. Utilize the weather-briefing "cookbook" to select which images and movies to show. Give a well structured weather briefing using appropriate maps and graphs, and finishing within the alotted time. Gain experience in public speaking and working as a team. Strengthen your understanding of atmospheric dynamics and thermodynamics. Strengthen your ability to form a 3-D picture of the weather in your mind. Utilize appropriate terminology and jargon.
PSPS Guest Lecture by Mina Deshler. See fb32. Explain the pros and cons of a Public Safety Power Shutdown (PSPS).
Team Building Before your team creates the Case Study capstone presentation and report, it is wise to discuss with each other about your strengths (where you can contribute) and your desires regarding the contributions of others. Complete the "Skills Matrix" that tabulates the strengths of each team member. Negotiate a "Team Charter" that lays out the expectations of all the team members, and endorse the resulting plan.
